Happy Holidays Across Time and (Relative Dimensions in) Space

For Christmas, and this is meant to be an "optional assignment" (that's rather fun anyway), I have three short stories that should help you understand our discussions of television narrative. None of these three are set in the Whoniverse, but they should all help you understand the nuances of a "series narrative," whether you're applying it to Doctor Who or any of your favorite television programs:

  1. "Eight Episodes" by Robert Reed
  2. "Magic for Beginners" by Kelly Link
  3. "The Serial Murders" by Kim Newman

Have you done the following?

(a behind-the-scenes promotional video aired as a Doctor Who Confidential special episode before the initial 2005 broadcast of "Rose" that provides some background for both the current incarnation of the Doctor Who series that we are watching, as well as the more literal incarnations of the Doctor himself since 1963)

  • Take a look at Jason Mittell's essays, starting with "Film and Television Narrative."

After that, if you're a fan of the other shows he talks about (The Wire, The Simpsons, Lost, talk shows, etc.), go ahead and read his other essays, too. They'll certainly help you in this class as well as your own thinking about your televisual experiences.

The "actual" Journal of Impossible Things (from which I took the name for the episode journal I required you to keep during the semester) appeared in a two-part Series 3 story called "Human Nature" / "Family of Blood."

Anyone who hasn't seen that and is planning to should avoid clicking on this link, which contains SPOILERS: http://community.livejournal.com/tenored

I found them while browsing through a tumblr account of tattoo designs. Thought they were awesome. :D Definitely made me see Doctor Who through a whole new perspective! Haha

It's a game i just found! Some of you might want to play it. We haven't met one of the monsters, so in case you're wary of spoilers or whatever, don't click! Otherwise, it's pretty fun.
